Home / How Thick Should a Glass Pool Fence Be?
Having a glass pool fence that is of the correct thickness is vital to a safe pool area. Why? Because the panels will stand strong when exposed to the harsh elements, including sudden impact, extreme wind, and harsh UV rays. Plus, thicker glass panels are more likely to meet Australian Standards, and pass an independent certification assessment, whereas thinner glass panels may not.
However, with so many types of glass fencing and thicknesses on offer, it can be hard to know which one will meet your unique requirements.
In this article, you’ll learn about the recommended specifications for both frameless and semi-frameless glass fencing panels, what the Australian Standard says, and what to expect from a professional installer.
For expert advice on how thick your glass pool fence should be, contact Dunn & Farrugia today.
Glass panel come in a range of thicknesses, from 6mm up to 18mm. How thick each panel should be depends on the length they need to span. So, the longer the fence, the thicker the panels must be. Taller than usual glass panels should also be thicker to compensate for the increased height.
Thicker glass panels are more expensive than thinner panels. Yet, despite the increased cost, they offer far greater peace of mind and security in the long run. Which should ultimately be your main goal when it comes to buying a glass pool fence in the first place.
Generally speaking, frameless glass fencing panels should be at least 12mm thick. While semi-frameless glass fencing should be at least 10mm thick. Technically, you may be able to have thinner panels between 6mm and 10mm, and still meet Australian Standards. However, there’s no guarantee of this, and the thinner panels are more likely to break in the event of sudden impact and severe weather. Ultimately, it’s not worth the risk.
How thick should glass pool fence gates be? Most glass pool gates are a bit thinner than boundary panels, ranging between 8mm to 10mm. Since glass gates are smaller than boundary panels, they can be slightly thinner, yet still strong and durable. Plus, by having thinner glass gates, you don’t have to pay for stronger-than-necessary hinges and latches.
If your swimming pool or spa is deeper than 300mm, then you must have a safety barrier around it to prevent unrestricted access. In regards to glass pool fencing, the barrier must comply with the following building requirements and safety standards:
The height of a glass fence must be at least 1200mm and the gaps must be less than 100mm between each panel.
On top of this, the fence must be situated away from any objects or structures, which may be used as a foothold to access the pool. For example, a nearby pot plant, barbecue, statue, or column. This area is referred to as a Non-Climbable Zone (NCZ). Under most state and territory legislation, the NCZ must be at least 900mm on the outside of the pool fence all the way around.
Using a reliable, trustworthy, and licensed fencing installer is the best way to ensure your glass pool fence is thick enough and meets the highest standards.
